America's Unknown Child

The most prominent historical case of a child found wrapped in a cardboard box is that of Joseph Augustus Zarelli. Known as "America's Unknown Child," the 4-year-old boy was found deceased, naked, and beaten inside a cardboard box in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 25, 1957. The case remained unsolved for decades before his identification in 2022.
