Michael Rockefeller, 23-year-old son of NY Governor Nelson Rockefeller, vanished on November 19, 1961, while exploring the Asmat region of Dutch New Guinea. While officially declared drowned, strong evidence—investigated in Carl Hoffman's book Savage Harvest—suggests he reached shore and was killed and eaten by the local Asmat tribe in a ritual act of revenge for previous Dutch colonial violence.
